Varoš brewery
Overview:

Varoška Pivovara is a craft beer brand named after a neighborhood renowned for its vibrant bar scene and social hangouts.

The label design project aimed to launch the brand's first beer, emphasizing the unique qualities and handcrafted experience of craft brewing.

The target audience includes craft beer enthusiasts of all ages who appreciate the artistry and specific tastes of craft beers.

CHALLENGE:

The project presented several challenges, primarily the constraints of a limited budget that restricted the use of premium materials or specialized printing techniques.

The design also needed to reflect the brand’s casual, approachable, and humorous personality while ensuring it stood out in a competitive market.

Additionally, the client required a scalable design that could be adapted for future product expansions.

SOLUTION:

The design concept centered on a hand-drawn illustration of the main street in the neighborhood, symbolizing the brand’s roots and the lively culture of social gatherings. This illustration served as a consistent backdrop, while specific details—such as color and a designated space for witty copy—allowed for differentiation between product lines.

To align with the brand’s identity and target audience, the design embraced a rough, handcrafted aesthetic that reflected the human touch inherent in the brewing process.

The use of vibrant colors ensured easy product differentiation while maintaining a friendly and approachable tone.

Functionality was key: the label’s front-facing third was focused on visual appeal, while the remaining two-thirds met regulatory requirements and ensured readability.

PROCESS:

The development of the Varoška Pivovara label design was a detailed and collaborative effort that balanced creativity with strategic planning:

  • Research and Inspiration: The process began with an in-depth exploration of the brand’s origins, target audience, and competitive landscape. The team focused on capturing the neighborhood's character, known for its vibrant nightlife and community spirit. This research informed the decision to incorporate a hand-drawn illustration of the main street, which would serve as the centerpiece of the design.
  • Concept Development: Early sketches and brainstorming sessions helped crystallize the idea of using the street as a consistent stage for the brand. The decision to highlight humor and approachability in the design came from understanding the personality of both the brand and its target consumers—craft beer enthusiasts who appreciate effort and storytelling in a product.
  • Collaboration with the Client: The client played an active role throughout the process, fostering a close working relationship. Communication was frequent, with daily interactions via email, phone calls, and in-person meetings. This hands-on approach ensured that every detail aligned with the client’s vision. The collaborative process was further enriched by product tastings, where the flavor profiles of the beer inspired subtle design choices.
  • Iterative Refinement: Because the team and the client invested significant time upfront to refine the core idea, the design process proceeded smoothly, with minimal revisions. The foundational design was robust enough to accommodate future variations for an expanded product line.
  • Technical Execution: The team translated the sketches into a print-ready design, ensuring compatibility with digital printing methods to align with the project’s budget constraints. Care was taken to balance aesthetics with functionality—allocating space for required legal information, ensuring legibility, and maintaining the brand’s playful personality in the copy.
  • Scalability Planning: Given the client’s plans to expand the product line, the label was designed with scalability in mind. The framework allows for seamless integration of new elements, such as different colors and humorous stories, ensuring consistency across all future products while keeping each label distinctive.

This detailed and iterative process not only delivered a compelling label but also set the foundation for a cohesive and adaptable brand identity.

By blending creativity, strategy, and collaboration, LA VOL ensured the client’s vision was brought to life.
